Fire in the Year of Four Emperors, set in 69 CE, has the hero, Rokus, on a journey home to Batavia (present-day Netherlands) after doing time in a Roman prison. A Romanized Celt and former officer for Rome in Britannia, Rokus comes to terms with his waning allegiance to the Empire, while embracing his role as leader of the Batavians. He is inspired by a brave little orphan girl and the notable soothsayer from Germania, the beautiful Veleda.
